Which one should you buy?
Seagate IronWolf 8TB NAS Hard Drive
Choose the Seagate IronWolf 8TB if you want IronWolf Health Management — Seagate's NAS-specific firmware that integrates with Synology NAS to run drive diagnostics, preventive care alerts, and 3-year data recovery service.
WD Red Plus 8TB NAS Hard Drive
Choose the WD Red Plus 8TB if your NAS runs continuous 24/7 workloads and you prioritise CMR recording technology — WD's confirmation of CMR (not SMR) on the Red Plus is clearly documented, while some Seagate IronWolf SKUs have had SMR confusion in the past.
What the spec table doesn't show
Backblaze's Hard Drive Stats (a public dataset from millions of drive-hours in production) shows both drives perform similarly in real-world failure rates. However, IronWolf Health Management adds actual value for Synology users: it runs NAS-specific diagnostics (rotational vibration compensation performance checks, unusual power cycles) that standard SMART doesn't cover. If you're running a Synology NAS, IHM is a genuine feature advantage. For QNAP or other NAS brands, this advantage disappears.
Verdict
For a Synology NAS: the Seagate IronWolf is worth checking the price on — the IronWolf Health Management integration is Synology-native and adds real diagnostic value. For QNAP or other NAS platforms: buy whichever of the two is cheaper on the day you're purchasing.
