Which one should you buy?
Samsung 990 Pro 1TB
Choose the Samsung 990 Pro if you want the best price-per-GB at 1TB with top-tier sequential speeds for a gaming or all-round PC build.
WD Black SN850X 4TB NVMe SSD
Choose the WD Black SN850X 4TB if you need massive NVMe storage, use a PS5, or want WD's Game Mode 2.0 pre-caching for faster game loads.
What the spec table doesn't show
WD's Game Mode 2.0 intelligently pre-caches frequently loaded game assets in the background, reducing in-game load hitches in open-world titles. That's a real-world advantage the spec table doesn't show. However, this feature only activates inside the WD Dashboard app — set it and forget it on a gaming PC, but it's useless on a NAS or workstation.
Verdict
The Samsung 990 Pro is the better value pick at 1TB for most PC builders: it matches the SN850X on sequential speed and beats it on price-per-GB. Go with the WD Black SN850X 4TB only if you specifically need 4TB of NVMe storage or are installing in a PS5.
