Before buying, check that your laptop's USB-C port outputs video. With DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt or USB4, one cable carries both picture and power and setup takes seconds; with a data-only USB-C port you need the HDMI input and a separate power source. Most portable monitors use similar 15.6-inch 1080p IPS panels, so the real differences are the stand, the cover, build quality and brightness. Pay more for a 144Hz panel only if you game on it.

Thunderbolt and USB4 ports always do; plain USB-C ports on budget laptops sometimes only handle data and charging. Look for a small display or Thunderbolt icon next to the port or check the laptop's specifications. If the port cannot carry video, use the monitor's HDMI input with separate power.
Can a laptop power a portable monitor?
Usually, yes. Over a single USB-C cable the laptop supplies both video and power. At high brightness, or with a laptop that limits USB-C power output, the screen may flicker or dim; plugging a USB-C charger into the monitor's second USB-C port fixes that. Phones and tablets often cannot supply enough power on their own.
Is 60Hz enough, or should I get a 144Hz portable monitor?
60Hz is fine for documents, spreadsheets, video calls and video playback, which is how most people use a portable monitor. A 144Hz model such as the ARZOPA Z1FC is worth it for gaming on a laptop with a capable graphics chip, or on handheld PCs that can drive high frame rates.
What is a laptop screen extender?
A laptop screen extender clips to the back of your laptop lid and slides out one or two extra screens on either side, turning a laptop into a two or three-screen workstation. They are heavier than a standalone portable monitor, need a laptop within the supported size range, and some models require a display driver to run both screens over one cable.
Can I use a portable monitor with a console or phone?
Consoles such as the PS5 and Xbox connect over HDMI, with the monitor powered separately through USB-C. Phones need USB-C video output: Samsung Galaxy phones with DeX and iPhone 15 or later models support it, while many budget Android phones do not.
Are portable monitors bright enough to use outdoors?
Most budget portable monitors are noticeably dimmer than a laptop screen, which is fine indoors but hard to read in direct sunlight or next to a bright window. If you work in bright spaces, look for a matte anti-glare panel and a higher brightness rating in the listing, and keep the screen out of direct sun.
