Our Verdict

The Crucial X10 6TB is the highest-capacity portable SSD in this category. It reads at 2,100 MB/s and writes at 2,000 MB/s via USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, with IP65 dust and water resistance and 3-meter drop protection. At $643.99 ($107.33/TB), it costs $385.60 more than the WD Elements 6TB portable hard drive ($258.39), which holds the same data at a fraction of the SSD's speed. That speed gap is the entire justification for the price premium: photographers pulling 6TB of RAW files, video editors working directly from the drive, or anyone who needs 6TB of fast active storage will find the X10 the only portable option at this capacity. The WD Elements 6TB HDD makes more economic sense for cold storage and document backup. At 4.5 stars from 2,479 reviews, ownership data is solid for a high-capacity drive. Choose the X10 when 6TB of SSD-speed active storage is the use case; choose the HDD when the data is cold.
