Which one should you buy?
Samsung 990 Pro 1TB
Choose the Samsung 990 Pro 1TB if you want the higher rated write speed (Samsung lists 6,900 MB/s against WD's 6,300 MB/s) and the larger buyer record, with more than 13,000 Amazon ratings at 4.8 stars.
WD Black SN850X 1TB
Choose the WD Black SN850X 1TB if you game on a PC and want WD's Game Mode 2.0, or if it is the cheaper of the two on the day.
What the spec table doesn't show
On paper the two are close at 1TB: Samsung rates the 990 Pro at 7,450 MB/s read and WD rates the SN850X at 7,300 MB/s, and both carry 600TB of write endurance and a 5-year warranty. The difference is in the software. WD Dashboard's Game Mode 2.0, which WD says preloads frequently used game data, only works on a Windows PC, while Samsung Magician handles firmware and health checks for the 990 Pro. For a PS5, buy either drive in its heatsink version, because Sony requires cooling in the expansion slot.
Verdict
The Samsung 990 Pro 1TB is the safer default: slightly faster rated writes, the same endurance and warranty, and a much deeper review record. Pick the WD Black SN850X 1TB when it costs less on the day or you want Game Mode 2.0 on a gaming PC; the table above shows today's prices.
