Which one should you buy?
Samsung T9 2TB Portable SSD
Choose the Samsung T9 if your laptop or desktop has a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) port and you transfer large files frequently — its 2,000 MB/s speed cuts transfer time roughly in half versus the SanDisk.
SanDisk Extreme 2TB Portable SSD
Choose the SanDisk Extreme 2TB if your computer uses a standard USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) port — which is the case for the vast majority of laptops — as it saturates that interface at 1,050 MB/s and the Samsung T9's speed advantage is completely nullified.
What the spec table doesn't show
This is arguably the most important hidden spec in portable SSD shopping. The Samsung T9 is rated to 2,000 MB/s — but that speed only activates over a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) port. Most USB-C ports on laptops in 2025–2026 are USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps), not Gen 2x2. Plugging the Samsung T9 into a 10Gbps port caps it at 1,050 MB/s — identical to the SanDisk Extreme. Before buying the T9 at a premium, check your laptop spec sheet for '20Gbps' or '40Gbps' USB.
Verdict
For most buyers with standard USB-C ports, the SanDisk Extreme 2TB is the practical choice — you get the same real-world speed at a lower price. Only buy the Samsung T9 if you've confirmed your machine has a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) port and you regularly transfer files larger than 10GB.
