The SoHo 220 bundles the NAS enclosure and two 4TB drives at $395.99, configured in RAID 1 out of the box for 4TB of redundant storage where one drive can fail without data loss. It also supports RAID 0 and JBOD. Building a comparable setup yourself, a Synology DS223 enclosure at $170-200 plus two 4TB WD Red Plus drives at $60-70 each, totals $290-340 while delivering Synology's DSM software, better transcoding capability, and a more capable Realtek RTD1619B processor. The SoHo 220's 800 MHz Marvell Armada 370 on single 1GbE tops out at roughly 100 MB per second regardless of drive speed, which is adequate for home backups and file sharing but cannot serve a Plex library that needs transcoding. For a buyer who wants one box with drives included and no configuration decisions to make, the SoHo 220 is the plug-and-play option.
