The Synology DS223j is the cheapest way into Synology's DSM software in a two-bay NAS, sold without drives. Its Realtek quad-core processor and 1GB of memory are weaker than Plus-series models, so 4K video transcoding and heavier apps will struggle. For personal backup, phone photo libraries via Synology Photos, and basic file sharing for one or two people, it handles the job reliably. It has 877 Amazon ratings at 4.5 stars. Its 1GbE port limits transfers to about 110 MB/s. With two drives in RAID 1, one drive can fail without data loss. Choose the DS223j for a reliable first Synology; the DS223 adds more memory, and the DS225+ adds a faster Intel processor.
