Value Score Breakdown

Our Verdict

The Synology DS124 is a one-bay NAS for personal backup and private cloud storage for one user on a tight budget, sold without a drive. It runs Synology DSM on a Realtek quad-core processor, so it gets the same backup, photo and remote access apps as larger Synology models. It has 215 Amazon ratings at 4.3 stars. With a single bay there is no redundancy: a drive failure means data loss unless you keep an off-site or cloud backup. Its 1GbE port and modest processor suit phone photo syncing, documents and backups for one or two computers. Choose the DS124 for the cheapest Synology; for drive redundancy, the two-bay DS223j costs a little more.
