Our Verdict

The WD My Passport 4TB is a portable hard drive that adds security features the cheaper WD Elements lacks: 256-bit AES hardware encryption with password protection, plus WD's backup software and a 3-year warranty instead of 2. That makes it a good fit for anyone carrying client files, financial records or personal documents, where a lost drive shouldn't mean lost privacy. It is powered over one USB 3.0 cable and, like every portable hard drive, runs at roughly 120 to 130 MB/s, fine for backups and archives but slow for editing directly from the drive. It has more than 11,000 Amazon ratings at 4.6 stars for this capacity. Choose the My Passport 4TB when encryption and the longer warranty matter; if you only need cheap backup space, the WD Elements or Seagate Portable costs less, and a portable SSD is far faster if speed matters.
