Our Verdict
The Seagate Portable 4TB is a bus-powered USB 3.0 portable external HDD at $189.99 ($47.50/TB). It fills the gap between the 1TB ($119.99) and the already-active 5TB in the Seagate Portable lineup. The WD Elements 5TB ($216.00) costs $26 more and delivers 25% more storage at $43.20/TB, a lower per-terabyte rate than this drive. For a buyer who needs exactly 4TB and does not want to pay for unused capacity, this is a reasonable purchase. For a buyer flexible on capacity, the WD Elements 5TB or the Seagate 5TB offer better per-TB value. At 4.6 stars from 272,747 reviews (shared review pool with the 1TB variant), reliability data is among the most comprehensive in this category. If 4TB is the correct size, buy this. If the difference between 4TB and 5TB does not matter, pay $26 more for the WD Elements 5TB.
