The WD My Passport 5TB is the largest capacity in WD's popular portable line, with nearly 25,000 Amazon ratings at 4.5 stars. Compared with the cheaper WD Elements, it adds WD's backup software, 256-bit hardware encryption with password protection and a 3-year warranty instead of 2, which matters if the drive holds client files or personal documents you can't afford to have read if it's lost. It is still a spinning hard drive powered over one USB cable, so expect hard-drive speeds of around 130 MB/s, fine for backups and archives but slow for editing directly from the drive. Choose it when you want the most capacity in a pocket-sized drive with security built in; if you only need simple backup space, the Elements costs less per terabyte.
