Our Verdict

The WD Elements 6TB is the highest-capacity bus-powered portable external HDD in this category. USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface, no external power required, plug-and-play compatible with PC and Mac. At $258.39 ($43.07/TB) it is priced at nearly the same per-terabyte rate as the 5TB variant ($216.00 at $43.20/TB), making the 6TB the correct pick for any buyer choosing between the two: 1TB more storage for $42.39 extra at the same cost per terabyte. The WD My Book 8TB ($298.26) adds 2TB for $39.87 more but requires AC power and is a desktop-only drive. At 4.7 stars from 165,214 reviews (shared with the 5TB), it carries one of the strongest reliability data sets in this category. For bus-powered portable storage at maximum capacity, this is the correct choice over the 5TB. For static desk storage where a power adapter is acceptable, the WD My Book 8TB offers 8TB at $37.28/TB.
