What does Apple HomeView do?
HomeView is a 7-inch smart display that doubles as an Apple Home hub. Apple lists face recognition that switches to each person's own Messages, Calendar and Reminders, FaceTime with Center Stage, the new Siri AI, and a camera view that streams up to nine feeds at once. It also listens for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and alerts your iPhone. It controls Matter and Works with Apple Home accessories, so it isn't limited to Apple's own new devices.
Do you need HomeView for Apple Home?
No. A HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K already works as an Apple Home hub, and Apple says the new LG cameras work with any of them. If you only want automations and remote control, the $149 HomePod mini 2 does the hub job for half the price. The HomePod 2nd generation we track is the step up for sound. HomeView is worth $299 when you want a shared screen in the kitchen or hallway for calls, cameras and controls.
Cheaper smart home hubs if you don't use iPhone
Outside Apple's ecosystem, a dedicated hub costs far less. In our price data on October 13, 2026, the Amazon Echo 4th Gen was $99.99 with 152,000+ Amazon ratings, the Aqara Smart Hub M3 with Matter, Thread and Zigbee was $159.99, and the Home Assistant Green for fully local control was $219. All three work with Matter devices.
Apple's camera subscription question
Apple's LG cameras skip a separate camera plan but store video in iCloud+, with 10 days of history. That is a different model from the doorbells in our video doorbell subscription guide, where a microSD doorbell such as the Tapo D225 records locally with no fees at all, for well under half the LG doorbell's $249.95.
My verdict: pre-order HomeView only if your household already runs on iPhone and you want a screen-based hub; otherwise wait for reviews after November 13. Compare every hub we track on our smart home hub rankings.
