The Samsung 990 Pro 4TB dropped to $799.90 on Amazon on October 20, $300 below the $1,099.99 it cost on August 21. It's a real cut, but at 4TB it is still not the best value.
How does the 990 Pro 4TB compare with other 4TB SSDs?
At $200 per terabyte, the 990 Pro 4TB costs more than two faster or cheaper 4TB drives in our catalog. Prices are from our daily Amazon data on October 20 and 21; speeds are the makers' rated sequential reads.
| 4TB drive | Interface | Read speed | Price | Per TB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WD Blue SN5000 | PCIe 4.0 | 5,500 MB/s | $479.99 | $120 |
| WD Black SN8100 | PCIe 5.0 | 14,900 MB/s | $699.99 | $175 |
| WD Black SN850X | PCIe 4.0 | 7,300 MB/s | $789.97 | $197 |
| Samsung 990 Pro | PCIe 4.0 | 7,450 MB/s | $799.90 | $200 |
The 990 Pro's strengths are its buyer record and endurance: more than 13,000 Amazon ratings at 4.7 stars, and Samsung rates the 4TB model for 2,400TB of writes. The SN850X 4TB matches that 2,400TB rating for about $10 less.
Which 4TB SSD should you buy?
It depends on your slot. On a motherboard with a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, the WD Black SN8100 4TB is $100 cheaper than the 990 Pro and rated at twice its read speed. On a PCIe 4.0 system, the 990 Pro and SN850X perform alike, so buy whichever is cheaper on the day. If speed matters less than capacity, the WD Blue SN5000 4TB saves $320 against the 990 Pro.
My verdict
Buy the 990 Pro 4TB at $799.90 only if you want Samsung specifically. Everyone else gets more speed or more money back from WD this week. Storage prices have moved fast in 2026, so check today's price on each product page or on our NVMe SSD rankings before you buy.
