Value Score Breakdown

Our Verdict

The WD My Book 8TB is a desktop external drive requiring AC power, which separates it from every bus-powered portable drive in this category. At $298.26 ($37.28/TB) it offers better per-terabyte value than any portable option here except the UnionSine 16TB. It includes hardware AES 256-bit encryption, WD Backup software, and a 2-year warranty. The drive stays permanently on a desk; buyers who need portability should choose the WD Elements 6TB ($258.39) instead. The key decision at this price is between the My Book 8TB and the UnionSine 16TB ($479.99, $30.00/TB): the UnionSine offers twice the capacity at 19.5% lower cost per terabyte, but comes from a less-established brand with only 862 reviews at 4.3 stars. For a home office backup drive or Time Machine target where the drive stays plugged in, the My Book 8TB's established reliability and 13,004-review track record justify the higher per-TB cost.
