Our Verdict

The WD Red Pro 16TB is WD's professional NAS hard drive: 7,200 RPM with a 512MB cache, conventional (CMR) recording, a 300TB-per-year workload rating for enclosures of up to 24 bays, and a 5-year warranty, against 3 years for the Red Plus. It suits small-business file servers and larger NAS units that work hard all day. Its 3.9-star average, shared across the Red Pro family's 2,300 Amazon ratings, is lower than most drives we list, so buying from Amazon for easy returns is sensible. Its direct rival, the Seagate IronWolf Pro 16TB, has the same warranty and workload rating plus a data recovery service; in our price data the two have traded places, so compare on the day. Choose the Red Pro 16TB for a busy multi-bay NAS; for a quiet home NAS used for backups and media, the Red Plus line is enough.
