With a 250W TDP rating and operation measured below 35 dB at sustained load, it competes with the Noctua NH-D15 ($114) on cooling while undercutting it by $29 with a cleaner all-black aesthetic. Against the Noctua NH-D15, the Dark Rock Pro 5 saves $29, looks better in a windowed build, and measures slightly quieter at the same thermal load. For a Core i9 or Ryzen 9 build where silence matters and you don't want the Noctua brown-and-beige aesthetic, the Dark Rock Pro 5 at $85 is the strongest alternative.
