Which one should you buy?
Rode PodMic USB Dynamic Microphone
Choose the Rode PodMic USB if you want a plug-and-play dynamic microphone without an audio interface — USB-C connection, zero-latency headphone monitoring built in, and broadcast quality for $100 less than the SM7B system.
Shure SM7B Dynamic Mic
Choose the Shure SM7B if you already have an audio interface or are willing to invest in one — it's the industry standard for a reason, with better off-axis rejection and a legacy of professional radio and podcast use.
What the spec table doesn't show
The Shure SM7B requires an audio interface to reach its rated output level — without a preamp with at least 60dB of clean gain (Focusrite Scarlett Solo has only 56dB), the SM7B outputs a signal too quiet for recording. The Rode PodMic USB works immediately at full gain from a USB port. For a home office, that makes the PodMic USB the simpler setup: one cable, no interface to buy, and gain that suits spoken word.
Verdict
For a streaming or podcasting setup starting from nothing, the Rode PodMic USB is the more practical choice — no interface required, better gain staging for USB recording, and $100+ cheaper total system cost. The Shure SM7B is the correct upgrade path for someone already using an XLR interface or building a dedicated studio.
