Surface Laptop Ultra: $2,599 Price, Specs and Who It's For
Microsoft's Surface Laptop Ultra with NVIDIA RTX Spark starts at $2,599 and ships October 16. Confirmed specs, who it suits, and how it compares with MacBooks.
Microsoft's Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599 and ships on October 16, with pre-orders open now at microsoft.com. It's the first Surface built on NVIDIA's RTX Spark chip, and Microsoft confirmed the price and date at its October 7 event in San Francisco.
Surface Laptop Ultra specs confirmed so far
| Base model ($2,599) | Higher configurations | |
|---|---|---|
| Chip | 18-core RTX Spark, 5,120 GPU cores | 20-core RTX Spark, 6,144 GPU cores |
| Memory | 24GB unified | Up to 128GB unified |
| Display | 15-inch mini-LED touchscreen, up to 2,000 nits HDR | |
| Ports | Three USB-C, one of them a magnetic breakaway port | |
| Operating system | Windows 11 on Arm | |
The breakaway USB-C port is the detail I'd watch. Windows Central reports it's the first on any laptop: it works like Apple's MagSafe, so tripping over the cable pulls it free instead of dragging the laptop off the desk, but it still accepts any USB-C accessory.
Who should buy it
Microsoft is aiming this at creators, AI developers and engineers. The high-memory configurations can run large AI models locally, which is the main reason to pay for 64GB or 128GB. For video, photo and 3D work, the base model's 24GB is a reasonable starting point.
Gamers should be careful. The RTX GPU handles ray tracing and DLSS, but this is Windows on Arm, where some games and anti-cheat systems still don't run. A dedicated gaming laptop such as the ASUS ROG Strix G16 RTX 5070 Ti runs every Windows game for about the same money.
Surface Laptop Ultra vs MacBook
For creative work on the go, the obvious rival is a MacBook. The MacBook Pro 14-inch M5 and MacBook Pro 14-inch M4 Pro cover most video and photo workflows for less money, and if your work is mostly documents, browsing and light editing, a 15-inch MacBook Air M5 is plenty. The Surface Laptop Ultra makes sense if you need Windows, NVIDIA's CUDA software or very large amounts of memory for local AI.
My advice: wait for the first reviews after October 16 unless you need it immediately. Battery life and real-world performance on Windows on Arm aren't independently measured yet. Every laptop we track is ranked on our laptop rankings.
