The TP-Link TL-SG108 is our pick for most homes. It gives you eight gigabit ports in a fanless metal case with shielded ports, needs no setup, and has a long track record with more than 40,000 ratings. TP-Link sells it with its lifetime protection. Eight ports are the practical sweet spot: after the uplink to your router you have seven ports for a PC, consoles, TV, streaming box and a NAS, with spare capacity for later. The metal housing handles heat well in a closed cabinet. It does not offer multi-gig, PoE or management features. If your internet plan is faster than 1Gbps, look at the TL-SG108S-M2 instead.
