Where the MacBook Neo is enough
The Neo runs on the A18 Pro, the chip Apple first used in the iPhone 16 Pro. For school work, documents, browsing, streaming and video calls it is plenty, and it supports Apple Intelligence. The display is only slightly smaller than the Air's and just as bright. If you keep most of your files in iCloud or Google Drive, the MacBook Neo 256GB covers what most students need and costs much less than any MacBook Air. The 512GB MacBook Neo adds Touch ID and double the storage for a smaller step up.
Where the MacBook Air is worth the extra
Memory is the biggest reason to step up. The Neo has 8GB with no option for more, and MacBook memory cannot be upgraded later. The Air starts at 16GB, which makes a real difference with dozens of browser tabs, photo editing, or several apps open at once, and it keeps the laptop useful for longer.
Ports are the second. The Neo's second USB-C port runs at USB 2 speed, so only one port is fast enough for an external SSD. The Air has two 40Gb/s Thunderbolt 4 ports plus MagSafe charging, which leaves both ports free while it charges. It also drives two external monitors instead of one, and Apple rates its battery life up to four hours longer for web browsing.
For most people who want the Air, the 13-inch MacBook Air M5 is the one to get. The 15-inch MacBook Air M5 makes sense if it will be your main computer and you want the extra screen space, at 3.3 pounds instead of 2.7.

Buy the MacBook Neo if you mainly browse, write, stream and take video calls, and you want the lowest-cost way into a Mac. Buy the MacBook Air if you edit photos, keep lots of apps open, use two monitors, or plan to keep the laptop for five years or more; 8GB is the limit you will hit first.
